Cassie’s is a former bootleg running whorehouse that didn’t lose its character in the process. Now it’s a saloon, a libation station, a supper club – all Western style of course – just up the street from the rodeo and home to the best steak we can remember, down to the bone.
We at GORUCK are huge fans of Harley Davidson, so a trip to the museum was a must during our time in Milwaukee. It’s home to the original Harley from 1903 and the complete history of the bikes and the brand, but the wall of fan pictures is where we spent the most time. Though they don’t yet update it, if they did we’d send in our last picture in this post, taken 20+ years ago on a ’77 Super Glide Jason still lets his dad borrow to this day.
Seen from afar, Cedar Point rests peacefully above its peninsula on Lake Erie. However, the drive towards our favorite roller coasters builds, appropriately, to an adventure with outstretched hands, smiles at speed, and panoramas best caught from the front of the first car, with friends along to share the ride.
The Wright Brothers called Dayton home, a fact Ohio will never let anyone forget. Check the license plates sometime. The museum is worth the trip from anywhere and starts with the brothers and then highlights all facets of flight: planes, pilots and the fearless people (and dogs) who have jumped out of them.
GORUCK is full of dog lovers, so when we heard from far and wide about Wildrose and its passion for breeding and training the ‘finest gundogs in America’, we had to check it out. Blake gave us a full tour and we were thoroughly impressed with the trainers (Patrick pictured with Duke), the property and, of course, the labs.
Taylor Grocery is worth the drive, and the wait, from wherever you are. The catfish is a plenty good fish for anybody – so said Mark Twain – and while we agree, this is the best we’ve had, anywhere. Mississippi blackened followed by homemade peach cobbler (our friendly neighbors at dinner said “you can’t go wrong with that in the south”), and an atmosphere full of happy families and kids eating ice cream while a trio sings away, full of audience participation. We were happy to sing along, sign the guest books and the wall, and wish there were more places with such charm, and such customs.
