A Nighttime Challenge in the Nation’s Oldest City: St. Augustine, FL

St Augustine, discovered in 1513 by Ponce de Leon and founded in 1565, is the nation’s oldest city. There are many ways to tour such a historic town: leisurely walks, trolley cars, horse-drawn carriages, etc. There is also the GORUCK Challenge, a 23 mile trek over 10 hours in the middle of the night. The city’s Christmas lights were a constant presence as Class 007 saw, among all the history, the Fountain of Youth, the site of America’s first Mission, and the spot where Ponce de Leon claimed Florida for the Spanish Crown. But all 22 Challenge takers got so much more than the average tour. They moved ‘Old Misery’ together, (which is probably the largest log any team has ever moved for fun), they soaked up the Atlantic’s waves, and they learned to carry, and be carried by, their teammates. Just a short, scenic drive from GORUCK’s Florida house, we were happy for an excuse to raise the bar. And even happier that all who came finished strong, together.
