Good-bye Means Java Forever

Java died in my arms last week. Pain hurts and loss is the worst kind so it’s taken me this long just to whisper what I still can’t believe. Alone is a lonely place with a broken heart after all.

My last words to him were thank you and I love you. And I promised him we still had so many more adventures together and I’ll lead with my heart and you’ll know who’s by my side, same as always.

    I’m sorry for your loss Jason. I lost my best friend PJ (black lab) this past June after 13 years. It’s a kind of hurt I haven’t overcome yet and will forever be changed by.

    Java will live on through the community and most importantly, you. Again, I’m sorry.

    Dogs are unconditional in the love they give, and they become part of your life. I lost my chocolate lab almost 10 years ago, and it still hurts to think about. Java is in a better placee now, having adventure, and hanging out until you join him. For him it will be like no time has passed at all.
    Grieve in peace, and know that you have a whole world of GRTs grieving with you.

    Java played a huge role in my introduction to GORUCK. If it hadn’t been for him barking and licking during the welcome party I very well may have quit. I will hold on to every memory of him and I’m thankful to Jason for being such a great owner/friend to him. He had the best life imaginable for a dog and for that I will forever remember Java.

    Although I don’t know you or Java personally, It hurts me to hear that he’s gone. We grieve because we love, and being able to give and receive love from a companion is the ultimate thing in life. Please remember the love and life you gave to Java was a blessing for him and yourself. A blessing only those lucky enough to share such experiences in life will ever know. As a recent dog owner my only hope is to give the best life possible for my dog, and share memories and lessons that I know will make me a better person in the end for it. With a heavy heart, I’ll be giving Charlie (my 15 month old golden retriever) an extra big hug tonight.

    i sat in the porch and cried when my German shepherd Loki was backed over. at the time I wasn’t sure if he’d come out of it. but he did, he still has a limp but he’s goodness and kind spirit has never faded.

    Jason, I’m so sorry to hear of your loss. The first time I ever saw Java was flipping through the pages of Foster Huntington’s book – stopping on page 124 and thinking what a great looking dog.     It was a sincere honor and privilege to meet Java shortly after our amazing GRL in DC last month. Even though he was a bit under the weather, I could tell what an amazing dog he was. I still have a great picture of the two of you from that day.

    Sorry to hear of Java’s passing. I always enjoyed his photos. He was a beautiful Lab. It’s never easy losing a four legged family member. My “Penny” passed unexpectedly three weeks ago today and I still find myself breaking down emotionally. Unconditional love from a family dog is priceless.

    I know the kind of pain and grieve that you are facing. On October 9th, 2013 we lost our beloved yellow lab. He was 14 years, 10 months old and we were truly blessed to have shared our lives with him for this length of time. I have lost close family members but I have never felt this level of grieve before. It helps to remember all the great times we shared. I am sorry for your loss of your best friend.

    Hey Jason. My family and I were so sorry to hear about Java. My son has the Java is my Homeboy T-shirt and it’s one of his favorites. Our black lab, Langley just turned 8 and is getting the white fur around her muzzle. She’s as much a part of the family as any of us and I dread the day its time for her to move on.

I also have a Lab named delta who is close to my heart. When I found your site and saw you and Java it was just before I got Delta. keeping up with you guys over the internet had inspired me to train hard, keep posetive about my training, and Love my dog.     I know the pain and sorry for your loss. I met you and Java at the Nasty. He was laying down in the PX. He seemed in a lot of pain. He was a great dog (I have a chocolate lab, so I speak from experience they are great dogs). Somehow the great dogs touch our lives in ways we didn’t know possible.

    God Bless. We are crying with you brother. Clearly, Java was a big part of your life, Go Ruck and the Go Ruck Community. I can’t say I actually met Java. Saw him Looking Cool at Nasty. In all the posts, photos and in person he was one Happy Looking Dog. In all the photos I have seen with the two of you together his love is clear. You did right by him.     Jason, I just became part of the community after completing a GRT in Salt Lake City on my 52nd bday. We love our dog Kingston who is the Lock-n-Load Java mascot and there have been few times in my life I have not had a dog as a family member, so I feel your pain brother. Hang tough. One of the things that attracted me to GORUCK was the values and esprit de corps I saw in your organization. Keep the heart in this organization and you will continue to thrive and grow brother.     Jason, while I haven’t had the privilege of meeting you, as a longtime GORUCK fan, I felt an instant connection to the brand in large part b/c of Java’s prominence as a GORUCK ambassador. In addition to making kick ass gear and being a champion of American manufacturing, your willingness to open up that aspect of your private life has humanized GORUCK in way that is hard to put into words. Quite simply, it feels like a Brand of the people…like we’re all a part of it. As someone who grew up with retrievers currently has 2 Rhodesian Ridgebacks, I know how hard losing a family member is.     I couldnt imagine losing my dogs. They are the most consistent daily presence in my life and I go about my day normally with them around me as if they are human family members.     I just said good bye to my dog Hershey. She had cancer, and all of that. It was horrible. But, I know that my dog lived every moment fully, and did not miss out on a minute of love and adventure.

    Neither did yours, and from what I can tell, neither do you.

    I read your post a couple of weeks ago and was emotional based on your connection with Java. Although I have never attempted a Goruck event, I follow closely.

    Yesterday, I had to put my dog, Ozzy, to sleep. I did not think it would be as hard as it was. Stupid, me.

    Sorry for your loss. I had Ozzy for 13 years. He was my first “kid” and was a great companion.

    Holy crap I just saw this today. I’m so sorry for your loss of Java. Pets become such a huge part of our lives without us even realizing it. I lost my two dogs last summer within two weeks of each other and the pain is still very real. Although I’ve never met you or had the pleasure of meeting Java, I know he had a wonderful life.     I can relate to this as I had to let my pal go last Monday. He was my main man and I will miss him dearly.

    Sorry for your loss brother. Although my pup passed away over a decade ago it still pains me. She lived a very full life, over 20 years. She was my best friend as a child and the day we had to put her down was painful. Java will be welcomed into Doggy Paradise..

    Oh my goodness, I’m so very sorry for the loss of your dear friend. I can express a feeling of understanding for I lost my Ruger a few years ago. He left behind a wonderful “sister” Abbey and I couldn’t imagine my life without her after I lost him. Our family has grown to have 4 more “siblings” and I embrace the moments of puppy love and tail wags. May Java and Ruger do what Labs do best and swim till their heart content in the after life. While they are waiting for us to come home.

    I saw this just now while sitting in my Apartment in Ghana, West Africa far from the dogs I love back home. Everyday I go to work carrying school supplies and a laptop in my GoRuck. When I put on the bag I think of the photos that I’ve seen of Java and the spirit of the company that he helped build, the lives that he helped change. This is inspiration. Your picture has brought up the deep and sorrowful feelings that I have and which I daily force to hide for my little buddy which I lost months ago.     We all go into dog ownership knowing the reality of their life span. Its a cruel trick of nature that such loyal,unselfish, constant, and valued partners get the short shrift of life with us. Java being such a part of Goruck is, I’m sure a constant and painful reminder… But life goes on and the great times with java are immortalized in these pages. A lot of us have gone through the same sadness at the loss of a valued partner…In time a new pal,(not replacement) could carry on the same tradition as Java. Still so sorry for your loss.

    Jason, my deepest condolences on the loss of Java. I actually lost our dog the day you posted this news. Our pets are like family. We keep comfort in the fact that there is a special place in Heaven for our pets. I hope to meet at some point as I am training to do a Challenge and have just begun to follow the GoRuck life. I plan to come by the Neptune Beach store in June when we are down in the area on vacation. Ruck on brother!

    Jason, I hope things are going better for you. I also held my 12 year old weimaraner as she passed. It has been 5 years since I lost Pico. I have great memories and still miss her dearly. I never thought I would have such a great dog again but now I have two weimaraners from the same breeder. They bring me new memories and great joy but they will never replace the relationship I had with Pico. I will be just as crushed when I lose them someday. It hurts to lose the ones we care about but I look forward to the reunion in Heaven with all my pups someday. Thanks for sharing such a painful moment with us. I have never met you but I have no doubt I would like you immediately. Anyone who cares about their dog as you obviously did is my kind of people.

    Jason, I hope the painful tears have turned into happy tears by now. I know mine have after loosing 4 Goldens, each one in my arms. I thought it would get easier each time and that I could never love like the last, but that’s not the case. They leave us with a very special gift like none other. There is comfort in knowing the last thing they hear or feel is your kind gentle touch and loving voice. I live for the hope that whatever my death consists of, that when it’s my turn, I can go with the memory of my dogs and a smile on my face.. I pray for that..
