Tribe Kids: Seek Growth

The theme for January is “Seek Growth.” This month we are focusing on fostering a growth mindset in children by encouraging them to set goals both big and small; to learn from their failures and grow. In order to encourage children to set big goals, we’ve chosen two amazing stories to share with them. In, “How to Solve a Problem,” Ashima Shiraishi tells the story of how, at 14 years old, she became the youngest rock climber in the world to climb a V15 boulder problem (only one other human had done it at the time!). Then, in “The Impossible First,” Colin O’Brady tells the story of how he became the first human to ski across Antarctica unsupported (he pulled his own sled with all of his supplies). Both of these athletes worked on achieving these goals for most of their lives, and started by doing small things consistently.

When helping children set goals, follow these suggestions in order to make the process and outcome appropriate for your child:

  1. Let them choose their own goal

If the child chooses their own goal, it belongs to them! No matter the goal, support them in their endeavor. Do they want to go to the moon? Ok, choose small steps to get them there and talk through how everyone starts somewhere.

  1. Discuss the purpose of their goal

Why would they like to do this? What does success look like? Any answer is ok! The purpose is to understand why they’d like to achieve this.

  1. Break the BIG goal into SMALLER parts

How will they get there? This is where children need our help. If they’d like to go to the moon, they can start by reading books about the moon. Choose some age-appropriate books to read with them and build from there.

  1. Brainstorm potential obstacles and how they will deal with them

Maybe they will fail some small step along the way (or a big step). How will they prepare for and learn from those failures? This is where the growth mindset comes in: document, talk about, and work through those failures with your children. Build on them and help them get better at what they are doing.
